“The combined efforts of Croydon Commitment, working together with South London YMCA have had a profoundly positive effect in the local community”

Toni Letts OBE,
Chief Executive of South London YMCA

Teams of young entrepreneurs from secondary schools in Croydon battled it out during November and December to try and make £100 go the furthest in the Schools 100 Challenge. Organised by Croydon Commitment, and sponsored by Mansell Construction Services for the second year running, 8 teams of students were given £100 and created lots of ways of making the pot into as much money as possible. The competition raised over £4000 (see Winner's Board below) and winning students from Edenham High School called "Edenham Elite" managed to turn their initial pot in over £1300 by hosting a school disco, christmas raffle and a sponsored silence to win the Most Money Raised award.

Norbury Manor Business Enterprise College entered two teams into the Challenge and they shared the Most Enterprising award who made use of Facebook, the social network site, in an attempt to maximise their profits. Norbury's Wild n' Crazy team used their Facebook contacts to mount a campaign to encourage people to Post a Pound and created an online shop selling glowing items to "light up the night". Harris Academy were so pleased with the attempts of their students, they are expanding the competition so that it is a internal event for all Harris academies ! The teams were encouraged in their ideas by their teachers at the school as well as mentors provided by Mansell Construction and they visited them for weekly meetings to discuss progress. The winning school, Edenham, kept half the money for themselves and the other half was donated to the Trust fund, and this will be doubled up by the government match funding. All the winners were announced at a special ceremony which had been brilliantly organised by Coulsdon College students studying Travel and Tourism and it was held at Jury's Inn, Croydon on 17th December. Our thanks go to all the schools involved for making such a big effort and to Coulsdon College students for putting on a such a fabulous occasion, plus all the mentors from Mansell who gave their time. It was a great success and here's to the next Challenge !

Christmas Hampers

Member companies of Croydon Commitment did it again at Christmas this year when they clubbed together and collected and donated luxury items for christmas hampers for 400 vulnerable and frail people in Croydon. Every year for the past 4 years, Croydon Neighbourhood Care asks Croydon Commitment companies to donate items for the hampers and this year was no exception. The companies who took part (in alphabetical order) were:

Barclays
Chantrey Vellacott DFK
Crystal Palace FC
Direct Line
Futures Supplies and Services
LexisNexis
Mansell Construction
Mondial Assistance
Mott MacDonald
Natwest
Nestle

and they donated the follwing items: christmas cake, christmas puddings, boxes of chocolates, fancy biscuits and cakes, fudge, coffee, alcoholic minatures, and mince pies which were collected by CNCA staff a few days before christmas. We arranged for a team of enthusiastic Mondial Assistance staff, led by Corporate Social Responsibility executive Rose Farrar, to pack the hampers at the HQ of Croydon Neighbourhood Care Association this year but previous years have seen Barclays, Pension Protection Fund and Home Office staff volunteer to help. This is fantastic annual effort by all companies and thank you once again for all your hard work !

Garden Projects
September is the month when, traditionally speaking, gardeners down their tools and prpeare their gradens for the winter gardens. Croydon Commitment decided to hold a challenge in the local borough to help those residents who need the most help tedning to their gradens at this time of year and companies came forward to answer the challenge. It was perfect timing for the weather was simply stunning for much of September and with 3 companies entering the challenge (for the first year running) including John Laing plc, Mondial Assistance and Trinity School, each team selected a graden which they thought most needed help. Laing and Trinity School both chose to help local residents in the area and a lot of chopping, mowing lawns and cutting shrubs back as well as a bit of landscape gardening came into play. Even the Chief Executive of Croydon, Jon Rouse, heard about the actitivity and dropped into one of the teams on the day ! Mondial Assistance staff put a team of staff to work at one of the YMCA hostels in Croydon and they left the hostel with a garden makeover looking herbaceous and bountiful.

This is a worthwhile project, and given the success of the project we will be running it again this year, so please look out for more details nearer the time and encourage budding gardeners to get involved !

Team Events
Team events are organised through Croydon Commitment with the aim of completing a bigger task which involves a group of staff, working at a charity or school for a day or more, if required.

Croydon Commitment sources the projects, identifies the tasks and organises the day on behalf of the company so that the brief can be completed in the time allotted. Environmental projects are often a popular choice involving ground clearance, natural hedge building or making wood seating from logs, but other opportunities include painting a local hall or packing Christmas hampers.

Information sheets are provided specific to the project in question, tools and materials are provided where possible and lunchtime venues and transport links are identified.
